November Birthstone Spotlight: Citrine

November babies are extra lucky because they have two gorgeous birthstones to choose from: topaz and citrine. Let's take a look at the sunny gemstone known as citrine!

What is it?

Citrine is a semi-precious gemstone that is a variety of quartz. It is transparent, and is found in a warm spectrum of colours from pale to deep golden yellow, to orange and even brown-ish orange. Because of its colouration, it has often been confused with topaz.

This handcrafted pendant features warm yellow citrine chips on the branches of a hand-wrapped silver tree. It is hung on an 18" nickel-free, silver-plated chain. As each tree pendant is made from free-form gemstone chips, yours will differ slightly from the photo and be completely unique to you! A perfect gift for a nature lover, a fan of the fall, and especially your favourite November baby, as citrine is the birthstone for November.

In Celtic mythology, the Tree of Life is depicted as an oak tree, which are strong, sturdy, and long-lived. It was seen as a symbol of nature creating balance and harmony in the world, a meeting point where the earth meets the sky, or between the world we know and the one we can’t see.

Where is it found?

Natural citrine is most commonly found in Bolivia, Madagascar, Mexico, Spain, and Uruguay. They often occur in similar locations as smoky quartz.

Natural citrine, however, is rare. Often, citrines are a result of applying heat treatment to amethyst, which changes its colour from purple to yellow.

Historical significance

Citrine talismans have been found in ancient Egyptian sites. Ancient Romans commonly used citrine intaglio carvings and in signet rings.

Queen Victoria particularly liked citrine, and it was used to decorate her Balmoral residence. Thanks to both her love of citrine and of Scotland, brooches and kilt pins using citrine became quite popular.

Citrine was also popular during the 1930's and 40's Art Deco movement, where citrine adorned clothing, jewelry, and household objects.
