It’s hard not to love the shimmery beauty that is pearls. Classy, classic, and incredibly versatile, we love creating jewellery with these showstopping gems.
Here are some fun facts about pearls!
Pearls are a gemstone that are not really a stone at all. Pearls are formed in mollusks, such as oysters, when a bit of sand or debris get stuck inside their shell. The mollusk will create layers of a substance called nacre, which protect its soft body from the foreign object. These little balls of nacre are what become pearls!
Natural pearls are pretty rare. Cultured pearls are created when a little bit of shell is introduced into the mollusk’s shell, causing it to form a pearl. Freshwater cultured pearls are typically cultivated from freshwater mussels, and saltwater cultured pearls from oysters.
Pearls are the birthstone for the month of June. They are also the gemstone representing third and 30th wedding anniversaries.
Pearls are fairly soft and can scratch easily. Because they are made of nacre and not stone, they are particularly susceptible to damage from chemicals and acids. Avoid perfumes, hairspray, solvents such as nail polish remover, and anything abrasive. Also, remove pearls before you exercise, as sweat can damage them as well. Pearls can be cleaned with a mild soap and water, and dried with a soft cloth.
