What is Aquamarine?

The name aquamarine comes from the Latin for "sea water," referring to its colour.

Aquamarine is a mineral in the beryl family, which also includes emeralds (green), heliodor (yellow) and morganite (pink to peach). It gets its iconic blue-green colour from traces of iron. Aquamarine is a fairly strong stone, rating a hardness of 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale, harder than quartz but less than diamond. It has a glassy surface and is transparent to translucent.
